FAQ — Citronella Essential Oil (Cymbopogon nardus / winterianus) (manufacturer)
First, our citronella essential oil is 100% pure and natural, distilled from fresh lemongrass-type plants traditionally grown in tropical Asia and Africa. Secondly, it offers a bright, lemony, grassy aroma that feels clean and refreshing in the air. In practice, brands use it in insect-repellent sprays, outdoor candles, aroma diffusers, soaps and deodorising home-care products. As a result, it has become a key ingredient in many “natural” bug-repellent lines and stress-relief blends for spa, home and garden. Finally, you can discover more in our Essential Oils collection or contact our team for private-label projects.
What makes Citronella Essential Oil different?
In short, citronella essential oil is famous for its fresh citrus scent and its role in natural insect protection. Moreover, the oil is rich in citrals, geraniol and citronellol, which give a powerful scent that mosquitoes dislike while humans usually find it uplifting and clean. Therefore, it is ideal for outdoor evenings, travel products and summer home fragrances. In addition, many aromatherapists use it in massage blends for tired muscles and to support a feeling of lightness after sport or long days on the feet.
How to use it — dilution & applications (step by step)
- First, always dilute citronella essential oil in a suitable base. For leave-on cosmetics, typical levels are about 0.5–2%; for home-fragrance and candles, higher levels can be used according to your formula and regulations.
- Next, perform a 24-hour patch test in the elbow crease before first use on the skin, especially on sensitive or reactive skin.
- Then, create insect-repellent mists by blending the oil with alcohol or hydrosols, plus an approved solubiliser and clearly visible safety directions on the label.
- Afterwards, design outdoor candles or wax melts. Add citronella essential oil at the recommended temperature so the fragrance remains strong but stable.
- Finally, for aromatherapy massage, blend it with vegetable oils (for example argan, sweet almond or grapeseed) and apply only on healthy skin, avoiding eye and mucous areas.
- Optionally, combine citronella with lavender, lemongrass or eucalyptus to build more complex summer and “fresh air” accords that stand out on the shelf.
Additionally, keep the total essential-oil load low in products designed for daily use. Alternatively, you can focus on rinse-off formats such as soaps and shower gels when targeting very sensitive users.

1) Is it natural? What is the INCI and origin?
Yes, our citronella essential oil is 100% pure and natural. It is steam-distilled from lemongrass-type plants such as Cymbopogon winterianus and Cymbopogon nardus. Typically, the INCI name is Cymbopogon Winterianus Herb Oil or Cymbopogon Nardus Oil. In terms of origin, we source from reliable growers in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and other tropical regions, depending on harvest quality and availability.
2) What are the main constituents and aroma profile?
On one hand, citronella essential oil is rich in citrals and citronellal, plus terpene alcohols such as geraniol and citronellol. On the other hand, these molecules create a sparkling citrus-grass note with a slightly sweet, herbal dry-down. Consequently, the oil performs very well in fresh, energetic fragrance compositions and outdoor blends.
3) Shelf life, storage and safety
- First, the typical shelf life is up to 24 months in unopened, well-stored containers.
- Next, store the oil tightly closed, away from heat and direct light (ideally between 10 and 25 °C) in a dry, ventilated place.
- Finally, for safety, use citronella essential oil externally only. It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for young children, unless advised by a qualified professional. Do not ingest, and avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
4) MOQ, lead time and documents
- Firstly, our typical MOQ for private-label projects starts from about 500 pcs per SKU, depending on bottle size and printing options.
- Secondly, standard lead time is usually 10–25 working days after artwork approval and confirmation of payment terms.
- Thirdly, we provide COA, MSDS and TDS, together with label review support. Finally, PIF/CPNP (EU) or CPSR assistance can be arranged on request to help you launch safely in your target markets.
